On RHEL, how to find firmware for your NIC?

August 8, 2011 2 comments

I ran across this the other day when I had to determine what drivers I’ve been using on my NIC cards. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but we’ve been having many unexplained network timeouts and upgrading all the drivers was necessary.

Here’s how find the version on RHEL5 (tested):
# ethtool -i ethX # Where X=[0|1|2…]

Check with your hardware vendor and NIC manufacture website for latest. We’ve been having issues specifically with Broadcom NetExtreme II 5709 NICs.

To get exact timing without having to format SYSDATE, use SYSTIMESTAMP instead.

SQL> select systimestamp from dual;

SYSTIMESTAMP
—————————————————————————
17-JUN-11 03.43.28.945268 AM +00:00

SQL> select sysdate from dual;

SYSDATE
